Dukan Diet -- Cruise Week 9 Friday

Day 59 (April 29, 2011)
Weight: 144.5lb, lost 1lb

I liked the number on the scale, but I was dehydrated by the evening, so I don't know what to expect tomorrow morning.

P90X Day 58: Plyo

Dragged myself through the workout.  I think I was dehydrated, I felt cold.  Drinking a lot of water helped my hydration, but it also made my fat pad on my abs jigglier, and I was wearing the wrong shorts (I usually wear higher-waisted ones to contain the jiggle), so jumping was uncomfortable.

Dukan Diet -- Cruise Week 9 Thursday

Day 58 (April 28th, 2011)
Weight 145.5, gained .75

I guess the food at the office function yesterday had wheat, the beef chunks probably had soy sauce.  Or was it the fruit plate?  I felt like a balloon this morning, I woke up short of breath.  Unfortunately, my lungs get compressed by all the gas, so I have to use my inhaler.  Not sure where I'm going to end up on the scale in the next week.  It's a mystery!

P90X Day 57: Chest & Back

Had my all-time highest number of pushups, 109!  I'm pretty pleased, considering this is a PP day.  I ate a whole bunch of almonds 2+ hours before the workout, so I got a few carbs. Plyo tomorrow.

Dukan Diet -- Cruise Week 9 Wednesday

Day 27 (April 27, 2011)
Weight: 144.75, lost 2.25lb

Poof! Two-thirds gone! OK, 1.5lb more than on my lightest day last Saturday, but better.  A very nice gentleman brought me a gift -- left overs from a conference on the floor I was working on.  He just placed the plate right in front of me, I couldn't say no -- it was a plate of fruit!  A few raspberries, a few strawberries, some honeydew melon, blueberries, and grapes. I haven't had fruit in 8 weeks, it was soooooooo gooooooood!  Then there was a catered function at my office, but I behaved, no wine or desserts or fruit or sushi. Of course, I'm not sure how they cooked anything, but I selected protein & vegetable and cheese choices.

Dukan Diet -- Cruise Week 8 Tuesday Pt. 2

Well, I've been fighting cravings all afternoon and evening.  This is why cheat meals/days don't work for me.  I could easily start chowing down now, and that would be it.  Posting on this blog is a good thing as well, I feel more motivated to get back to the hard work, or rather don't want to keep posting bad news and slip-ups.  It's sort of like competing against myself.  I also have two spreadsheets that I stare at endlessly -- I love numbers, what can I say?  I don't want the chart to stop going down! Well, until I reach my true/goal weight, 135lb.  I was only 8.25lb away a few days ago, now it's 12.  I'm staying positive though, I'm expecting to get back to 144 in a few days, and if I'm lucky, I'll be at 143 within a week.

I've been taking it easy this week exercise-wise.  It's recovery week for P90X, and I just needed a rest -- I know that fat loss stops with overtraining, so no routines.  I should start doing the week 9 exercises on Thursday, but I got a free invite to a movie, so I'll start Wednesday, skip Thursday and have a PP day, and be on schedule Friday onwards.

Dukan Diet -- Cruise Week 8 Tuesday Pt. 1

Day 56 (April 26, 2011)
Weight: 147lb, gained 3lb

OMG!  OK, that's some air and water retention.  I guess I'm not going to know how bad this is until Thursday or Friday, if I -- no, make that because I will behave.  It usually takes me about 3 days to get rid of excess fluids when I've had the 3lb gain in the past.  This is why I am shooting for 3lb lower than I truly want, because I put on 3lb from "eating normally".  I did still fit into one of my slimmer dresses, so I'm crossing my fingers.

Now for the bad news -- scarfed up lots of sweet potato chips -- the bag was open on the couch (thanks to my younger DD), and brainlessly ate a lot of them.  I'm worried about tomorrow's weigh-in...

Dukan Diet -- Cruise Week 8 Sunday & Easter "binge"

Day 54 (April 24, 2011)
Weight: 143.75lb, gained .75

Well, it wasn't much of a binge.  Here's what I had/did, utilizing Tim Ferriss' 4-Hour Body (4HB) tips:

1.25 scoop e.w. protein powder
Garlic extract pill -- "inhibits fat regain" (4HB)
Colonix -- insoluble fiber
Grapefruit juice (1 cup?) has a "glucose-lowering effect", so it seems to inhibit fat gain, but also prevents fat loss, so not good when you're trying to lose... (4HB)
Tea -- caffeine promotes a quick trip through the digestive tract (4HB)

THE BINGE -11:45-12:15
I walked to the subway, so that was more than 90 seconds of pre-binge exercise at 11:30 (4HB)
about 50 jelly beans -- I had 3 different kinds, so I had to try 2-3 of each color of each bag
1 starburst -- selected because it had fat, which evidently helps decrease sugar overload (4HB)
1/2 snack bag of almonds
Maybe 5 corn chips, 2 scoops into guacamole
90 minutes after I ate the jellybeans, I did 90 seconds of squats and wall pushups at 1:15(4HB)
So basically I had maybe 500 calories of jellybeans...

Lunch at 2PM was roast beef, salad, green beans, and 1 small meringue. That's it!  Dinner so far is chicken breast w/salsa.  I did not have a sugar crash, so far so good. I'll have some more veggies, and some yogurt, and some cheese.  We'll see what the scale shows tomorrow!

See, that extra .5 went away!  So now I've officially lost 1 stone, and almost 15lb.

Dukan Diet -- Cruise Week 8 Friday

Day 52 (April 22, 2011)
Weight: 144lb, gained .5lb

I woke up feeling terrible, I realized I was extremely dehydrated, so I had to drink about a liter of water, which of course meant that the scale wasn't kind.  I didn't keep up with my liquids yesterday, and the asparagus also is diuretic, I believe, so...  Inches at bust were the same as yesterday, so that's a good sign.  I wasn't able to drink my protein breakfast before the 30min mark, I was trying to sleep a little more, but failed.

Dukan Diet and Tim Ferriss' Slow Carb Diet

For those of you who are interested in where the 30g protein within 30min of waking up comes from, it's from Tim Ferriss' "The 4-Hour Body", which I bought earlier in the week.  He also has a protein/vegetable style diet called "The Slow-Carb Diet", but it includes a cheat day every week, and I'm not ready to do that.  I figured the 30g within 30 was easy to incorporate into Dukan.  I will follow Ferriss' methods to lessen the damage from bingeing, as I'm doing the Easter thing.

After reading Ferriss' book (the diet sections), I still feel Dukan will be better/easier for me to follow than Ferriss'. I like the Consolidation phase, but I'm probably going to be low/no gluten and low/no sugar thanks to Ferriss and Gary Taubes' NYT article, and Lustig's 90-min video, "Sugar -- The Bitter Truth".

!!!  I am going to wait and see whether I stay below 144 before I get super excited.  The last time I was at this weight was May of 2009, and I'd just been terribly sick, so it might have been December 2008.  I'm also going to have my first cheat day on Sunday, jelly beans & other Easter goodies, so I'll go a little backwards.  Sniff.

Dukan Diet -- Cruise Week 8 Wednesday

Day two of 30g of protein within 30min of waking. It's the first day my jeans are actually a little roomy.  I'm also going out of my way to avoid any added sugar, which I haven't really been doing.  The pasta sauce I've been eating has sugar, so I'm going to make my own sauce for the foreseeable future.  I also bought Vitamin D3 pills, so I'll be taking those instead of the sweetened D3 gummies that I've been enjoying.

I'm still hungry.  Hopefully it's actually thirst, and some liquids will solve the problem.

Lost inches in the first 30 & 50 days

My measurements (Day 1/Day 30/Day 50):

Chest (across the boobs wearing a thin sleep/sports bra): 39-37-36.75
Underbust: 32-31-30.5
Waist (where my natural waist is, which is above my navel): 31-29.5-28.5
Hips (around my hip bones): 41-38.5-38

The hip measurement is a little misleading, as my butt has risen and rounded w/all the P90X and BBL workouts.  I'm down 2 pant sizes (8-10 to 4-6), and was able to pull on my small old size 7 Levi's 501s (no stretch).  Can't button past the first button yet, but getting closer!

Lost inches: 30 days = 7 inches/50 days = 9.25 inches
Total weight lost: 13.8 lb, 6.25kg, .98 stone.  Lost bodyweight: 8.7%

Protein for breakfast

I just started to read Tim Ferriss' 4-Hour Body.  I'm still going to stick with Dukan, which in the Cruise phase is very similar, but evidently having 30g of protein within 30min of waking can really burn off the fat.  I decided to mix up my egg-white protein powder 1.5 scoops with the glass of water I usually drink after I wake up around 7AM.  Then I just finished my usual morning scrambled eggs at 10:15.  TOO MUCH!  I feel like I am going to explode! I think I'm going to have the drink, and skip the morning eggs for the next week, and see what happens.

I'm getting stronger, I'm able to get through Plyo with very few pauses now.  Today I did all of ARX (yay!  first time so far), and Back & Biceps.  Upped my chair-assisted pullups.  Since I'm alone with the dog, doing 2 routines is troublesome, so no evening workout.  I had a shopping-related long walk, so some cardio...  B&B was over by 2:15, so tomorrow's L&B will be 29-30 hours later.

??? I tried on my old test jeans (those ancient size 9 jeans) which fit better now, so it does not appear to be fat.  If my system doesn't start to move, I'll have to resort to Kleritea again. I forgot to mention that I had diet sodas w/aspartame on Saturday & Sunday & Monday. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.  It's a PP day, and I'll go light at dinner, since this is a rest day.

P90X Day 40: Legs & Back

RAWR!  I feel GREAT!  I did 18 more assisted pullups, and did much better on several of the exercises than I have so far.  I could feel my back muscles working hard, so I think my arms are getting stronger.  I had a cup of roasted carrots about 2.5 hrs before my workout, and had a lot of liquids during the afternoon, so I'm not sure what made the difference.  I also sort of dragged the workout out, I was watching The Biggest Loser and finishing the routines.  Hey, better than sitting on the couch and watching!  Major exercise high, I was licking the lid of the container my turkey pasta sauce was in!

Finally at 145!  I'm not going to claim I've reached that goal until I've reached 144 and stayed below 145 for sure.  This is soooo exciting!

P90X Day 37-38: Not Plyo and Back & Biceps

Yesterday we walked 30 blocks, all uphill, which was a good workout.  Not as good as Plyo, but I didn't have time to do Plyo, since I had to go to see "Prairie Home Companion" at the Town Hall theatre w/Garrison Keillor.  Wow, it was great!  His guests were Leon Redbone and Heather Masse. 

Today, I did Back & Biceps.  Of course I was interrupted by my girls over and over, and then my friend called, and we hadn't spoken in a long time, so I had to interrupt the workout again.  Anyway, by the time I started again, I think my blood sugar was crashing, I had to eat some almonds and a bowl of yogurt as I was working out.  I felt sort of weird, but I was able to up my reps/weights, and increase my chair-assisted pullups.  No unassisted yet.  Maybe next week, or week 9. I think I'm going to do Yoga tomorrow, and maybe try to double up X Stretch on Tuesday or Wednesday.  The girls are going  away, so I will be alone over the weekend, so my schedule is going to be flexible.

This went very well, I did 63 pushups, my second highest number ever!  Of course, as I get lighter, I can do more reps.

P90X Day 35-36 pt.1: X Stretch and ARX

Did X Stretch yesterday, and was able to get my forehead to my knee during my hamstring stretches.  My lower back is finally beginning to loosen up.

Today, I didn't get home until 9PM, shopping for various sheep and goat dairy products.  Plus I got my new 32E Freya sports bra in the mail.  It's red instead of black, much cheerier. I also ordered a 30F, but I'm going to return it.  I can always order it again if this band size ever gets too big, which seems impossible right now, but you never know!  Since I didn't have a lot of time, I ate dinner first, then did ARX from memory while I was watching TV. Did 344 reps, only 5 short of all of them.  I guess I'll be squeezing in the routines over the weekend again.  CS&T tomorrow.

Dukan Diet -- Cruise Week 5 Tuesday, last day of this week

Day 35 (April 5, 2011)
Weight 146lb, lost .5lb

The scale is moving again.  I also had some tea last night that helped me "go".  Must have done a good job, because I was able to put on my size 4 dress pants when I got home from work today.  I couldn't believe it.  At 145-146?  Of course, when I tried on my ancient Levi's 501s buttoning, not so nice.  They're 15+ yrs old, with a nice high waist, not like today's low-rise pants that can be more forgiving in the waist area!  I tried the "big" ones (size 9, can you say size inflation?) on, could button them, but that was it.  So I fit into 4s, but not 9s.  Does that mean if I fit into my Levi's 501 size 7s, I'll be wearing a 0 in today's sizes?  That'll be VERY FUNNY!  I was able to get into those 7's, let's see, at late as 1999, and sometime in the 2000's, but with the change in fashions, I haven't worn them in years.  They're my test jeans, for a reality check.  I also tried on a bunch of dresses from my closet, some of which I never actually wore.  Four fit now, and six are close, maybe in 2-3 weeks, just in time for spring!

P90X Day 34: Not Kenpo, BBL's Bum Bum instead

This routine is still hard, especially after Legs & Back day.  Maybe after another 3-4 weeks I can get through it without having to skip reps.  I'm also having trouble adding in the arms to the moves, and the booty shake?  I'm not getting that at all!  I feel so clumsy.

Frustrations with the scale

Yes, sometimes the number on the scale is not going down, and it can get really frustrating.  SO STOP LOOKING!  If you haven't exercised that much before, you will be gaining muscle as you are in your first few weeks/months in your new regimen.  The best way to determine what is going on is to try on clothes instead.  Do you have some pants that were too tight?  Try them on once a week, and they will tell you a lot more than a scale will.  My DD had a pair that could only be buttoned lying down two weeks ago.  Last week, she was able to button them standing up, and finally felt she could see some results.  And this week?  Buttoned more easily, and she could now really see a difference, and was able to believe that her hard work was paying off. 

I still get on the scale every day, even though it might not be giving me good news, because I want to nip problems in the bud.  I just have to whip out the tape measure regularly to reassure myself.

OK, finally!  And I'm definitely smaller, so whether earlier it was dehydration or whatever, the inches are decreasing and the pants are getting roomier.

P90X Day 31-33: Back & Biceps and Legs & Back

First time doing Back & Biceps in a few years, but I enjoyed it.  I also did all of ARX for the first time, only 10 reps short in V-up Combos!  Did the workout on Sunday afternoon.

Had an extra rest day on Friday, so I skipped Yoga, and went straight to my Monday routine, which is L&B.  I got to over 100 pullups.  Yes, they're still all assisted, but I'm going to try to do a close-grip pullup this week.  My legs are still a little weak, not sure why, so although I finished most of the moves, I had to stop and go more than I'd like.  And afterwards, I had to go out right away and down the hill and back to get cat food!  Thank goodness I didn't trip or otherwise embarrass myself.

P90X Day 30: Plyo

OK, I'm a day behind because I did it today (we were out last night, so no time), but it was an excellent workout!  That recovery week can really recharge the batteries, plus I ate dinner before, so I suppose I was well fueled.

I know, I didn't have much to eat today.  I was out and about, and ate the almonds as a snack, or was it lunch? I'm eating more carrots & broccoli now, probably some cheese and/or yogurt before I go to sleep.

Huh?  My measurements are no bigger.  Muscle?  Water retention?  Internal gunk?

Considering I had to stare at my kids eating Apfelstrudel  and Sachertorte mit schlag (with whipped cream), I think the almonds (coated with cocoa, not dipped in chocolate) and bratwurst weren't too bad.
