Why 2013 was different and I was successful at last

I've been looking back at my earlier years of trying to get back down to my optimum weight, and there's definitely a pattern.

12/31/2012: 19.25lb over my lowest
12/31/2011:   5.25lb over my lowest
12/31/2008:  6.75lb over my lowest

This year, that statistic is different:

12/31/2011:  .25lb over my lowest

More statistics:

Day one of 2012 compared to the last day of 2012:  9.25 gain (over the whole year I gained 19.25 over my lowest).  At the end of 2011, I was down 16.5 from my highest, but 2012 I gained it all back.

This year:

1/1/2013 - 12/31/2013:  9.75lb LOSS (over the whole year, I lost 17lb over my highest)

What did I learn this year that made the difference?  I stopped fooling myself, and also listened to my body:

1.      "Cheating" is just a bad idea. Not only does it add weight, but every time I feel a little worse, or it takes multiple days to recover. It now has to be REALLY worth it.  Having something during the holidays is not enough.  It has to be a once-in-a-lifetime situation.  Plus, being wheat/gluten-free on a trip can be done, I did it in Bruges.  Will I want to in Paris in February?  I'm still trying to figure that out.  I may limit my indulgences to one or two days instead of 6 straight days;
2.      I don't have to deviate from my diet to enjoy the holidays. People will understand;
3.      I had to cut down portion sizes to lose. My metabolism is slower as a 52yo female, I just can't eat the amount of food I used to.  I eat a protein-only breakfast (eggs & 1-2 pork links) and lunch is now also high protein, and really small (8-12oz of plain yogurt);
4.      I drink fewer beverages.  I found my kidneys can't handle the extra volume of liquids and I get extremely bloated, so "drink more water" does not work for me (my doctor agrees!);
5.      I can't drink red wine without waking up at night.  I also just drinking too much of it! Stick to ale and stout;
6.      I need to drink a dark ale/stout 2x a week for optimal kidney/bladder function;
7.      I can't use stevia anymore. Yes, I am allergic to it (it's in the ragweed family);
8.      I can lose weight even if I eat some fruit and carrots. Primal worked better for me than Dukan. I felt too deprived on Dukan. I will still follow the structure of Dukan, so I will have some sort of Consolidation phase, but carrots, apples & prunes are OK for me. Continuing to eat Primally for the rest of my life is like a Stabilization phase, so that works too;
9.      Excessive carbs (even gluten-free or non-starchy) do not work for me. I haven't been counting carbs, but when I do have more carbs than usual, I get bloated, so I have to be aware of that now; and;
10.   Last year I learned that I can get down to my optimum weight at 50yrs old.  This year I learned how I can get to that weight again AND MAINTAIN IT. The new year will be my opportunity to prove that I can maintain my lower weight.

A Christmas loss!

I stuck with my diet most of the time at  my various feasts.  I also came down with a cold, so I was really not that hungry, and didn't overeat as a result.  My mother graciously made me a gluten-free/dairy-free carrot casserole using brown rice bread crumbs and goat butter. It was nice to be able to eat the same foods others were (ham).  I skipped the mashed potatoes.  After our Christmas Eve dinner I also had maple sugar candy.  Friday I went to an Indian restaurant and had some rice, but I was able to prevent much bloating by taking an anti-gas OTC medication.  Why suffer for no reason?  Still, I'm not going to make a habit of eating carbs just because I can pop a pill, it's just not worth it.

I decided to have some red wine on Sunday the 22nd, which was a mistake.  I woke up at 4AM the next morning, and it's becoming ever-clearer that red wine and I don't mix anymore.  It's definitely a beverage that I just have difficulty regulating.  In fact, at a gathering I went to yesterday, I brought one of my beers, but then decided to have some red wine since I hadn't brought a second beer.  I had more wine than I should have, but ironically, since it was an afternoon party, by the time I was going to sleep, the wine no longer was disrupting my sleep patterns.  Still, I'm moving further and further away from drinking wine, and definitely not in the evening.

Christmas morning I got my real gift, I weighed in at 142lb!  Since then I've hovered in the 141.75-142.5 range.  Finally, I broke through that 143 plateau!

My NSV was that a second pair of those pants are now wearable.  The remaining two pairs must have more rigid fabric, they are definitely not going to fit until I'm down under 140.

Office Christmas party navigated

OK, so I tried on the other pants, and unfortunately these pinstriped ones are a little larger than the other three pairs, so it's not as big of a delight, but I'm going to just be happy about it anyway.  I will change the date of my reached goal when I fit into the smaller pairs.

Last night was the office Christmas party, held at a well-known hotel.  I don't want to mention the name, as I was very disappointed in the food.  Everything seemed to be smothered in sauce or cheese.  No carving station!  Come on!  There were a number of people who were unable to find something they wanted.  The Kosher station had some beef cubes and some chicken satay, the Southern station had what appeared to be short rib squares, and the Italian station had some grilled veggies, so that's what I had.  No dessert.  I also did not drink any alcohol.  One glass of free wine leads to two glasses of free wine etc. etc.  I didn't need the extra calories.  However, since I wasn't drinking and the food was not exciting, I didn't stay as long as I usually do, and went home early.  I didn't even dance, so I didn't burn any extra calories.  I did walk 15min to the venue from the office, and then again 10min to the subway.

The scale barely registered 143.25lb this morning. Why can't it go down faster?  I'm sure there was a lot of sodium in last night's food, and I was feeling puffy last night, so who knows what else was hiding in the food.  I'm being extra careful today.  Hopefully this weekend there will be more movement.

Remaining food challenges:

Dec 22nd Sunday -- Christmas dinner (early) w/family friends
Dec 23rd Monday -- My mom's birthday
Dec 24th Tuesday -- Christmas dinner

NSV and another holiday feast conquered

I was tired of rotating the same two pairs of pants, so this morning I tried on the next size down.  The last time I tried a pair in that size last week, the black pair were a little snug.  Today I tried on my gray pinstriped ones, and they fit!  NSV! And they were comfortable!  I am so happy.  Of course, now I have to try on the other 3 pairs (black, light gray, camel) and see if the ones I am wearing happen to be larger than the others.

Today was the departmental Christmas lunch.  I contributed a rotisserie chicken I bought at the supermarket across the street, as I knew it would be a safe food.  I had some of that, and some salad (no dressing).

The scale STILL said 143.5lb this morning, but I'm hoping it'll be lower tomorrow, finally!  I had an ale on Monday and a diet soda yesterday, so some puffiness is to be expected.  No bubbles today though.  The weekly average has been dropping, and since the small pants fit, I know I've been shrinking.

Birthday celebration -- I stuck with my diet

Yesterday we celebrated my birthday.  My afternoon snack was 3-3.5oz of salted cashews.  I knew the salt would not allow a drop in the scale, but that was OK.  Dinner was a small piece of grilled salmon and broccoli.  While everyone else had some Carvel ice cream cake, I had an apple and 1/2 a serving of my goat yogurt.   I had a bottle of my Belgian ale.  So it was a complete success!

This morning I was again 143.5lb.  I had gotten down to 142.5 a few days ago, but the sodium and ale explain the "gain", so I'm hopeful I'm going to be down in the 142s or even 141s any day.  I'm continuing to do secret pushups at work.

Remaining food challenges: (new one added)

Dec 17th Tuesday   Department Christmas lunch
Dec 19th Thursday Office Christmas party (primal food available)

Another Christmas feast successfully avoided

Saturday was the Finnish Christmas bazaar, and I didn't have anything to eat at it whatsoever.  Yay!  I bought a chocolate bar, but that's for the future.

The scale is barely moving, but I think I am shrinking.  Well, in some areas... I think my cup size has gotten bigger, at least on the top.  I've been slipping in pushups in the LR at work.  No, I don't get down on the floor, I do pushups against the counter, about 10 reps 1x or 2x per day.  It's the equivalent of the incline barbell press.  Today I switched it up and did close grip pushups, which are heavier on triceps.  Incline exercises are used to build up the upper chest in men, which in women sounds like it would plump the upper breast area.  Which means I have to use my larger-cup bras.  How sad!

Weight is 143.5lb, so I'm 1/2lb more than I was November15th, my "weigh-in" day for January Jeans Club 2014.  However, since I think I've added a little muscle, that's fine!

Thanksgiving, Birthday, Finnish Independence Day challenges

Today's weight was 144.5lb.  I am stuck at 143-145. I've been seesawing from 142.75 all the way up to 147 (mostly in the 143-145 range).

Thanksgiving Wed & Thurs I had gluten-free brownies, which had excessive calories & carbs, but no dairy or gluten. Other than that, I did well.  I was also invited to a "vegetarian thanksgiving" on Friday.  I had a stuffing w/rice but no gluten, and otherwise ate primally.  Probably extra calories though.  My birthday was also on Friday (51!), and I pretty much didn't celebrate.  We will be celebrating on Wednesday December 11.  We'll have steak w/veggies, and I will have an ale and some sort of fruit.  No cake, pie, etc.

I was able to attend the Finnish Independence Day celebration on Sunday and only ate the walnuts I had brought.  No karelia pies, christmas stars, pulla, gingerbread snaps.

I still have to make a concerted effort to cut down on the "desserts" even if they are apples & yogurt, just to cut down the calories for now. Maybe a few days a week, not every day. I am still following the plan that was getting the losses in August-September, but maybe I was walking a little more, and maybe I wasn't eating as many carrots/apples/extra yogurt.

My "planksgiving" challenge is slowly progressing, my longest plank was 55 seconds on Friday. As for the "work up to chinups/pullups", I haven't done any more than the first time, I was so sore and used it as an excuse and didn't do it again. I have to keep at it.

Upcoming food challenges:

Dec 7th     Saturday       Finnish Christmas bazaar w/food & candy I have to avoid

January Jeans Club 2014

You may have noticed the badge on the right -- Marion of Affection for Fitness and Satu of Body Capable has a January Jeans Club for 2014 which I have decided to join. I do well when I have a challenge, and I think this is perfect for me!  I have 4 birthdays as well as the holidays to contend with, and if I can just power through this period, I can reach my goal weight in January.  I was well on my way this autumn, but then I let our college tour trips ruin my momentum (see the graph above). Anyway, please visit Marion's blog and read more about the January Jeans Club 2014.

My pledged starting weight on this challenge is 143lb, which is Friday's weight.  I'm not going to count the extra pound that I have added due to bloating from yesterday's overindulgence. That means I have 9lbs to go to get to my goal weight.  If I end up shrinking but not losing all 9lbs, that's OK too.  My fitness goals this period are Planksgiving and the pullup workout I mentioned a few posts ago.  I've only done 3 plank workouts, so I am way behind!  Today I was able to do 30s, so I am one minute behind schedule.  My Planksgiving is going to be an ongoing challenge though, so I have to make it a habit, and soon I too can reach 3 minutes!

Trigger foods at home

As good as I am getting at eating Primal, I still fall into the gluten-free trap.  Friday I bought a package of Tate's chocolate chip cookies.  I was good, and only had 3.  Yesterday I had the remaining 11 cookies. Of course, they were delicious, but they had tons of carbs, and after two cookies, I was just stuffing them into my mouth.  Plus I also found the leftover bag of Snyder's gluten-free pretzels from our trip to Boston last weekend.  Now, I have to say that Snyder's gluten-free pretzels don't taste weird, they taste just like regular pretzels, they are the best!  However, they are also laden with carbs, which I scarfed down.  So, the downward march of the scale has been halted.  Sigh.  We'll see after the salt is flushed from my body today what the scale says tomorrow.  I got down to 142.5lb, but this morning I was 144.  I am more and more convinced that my plan for my birthday on the day after Thanksgiving, having Primal brownies, is a good idea.  Gluten-free products are still carb heavy and I just don't need that.

Dukan/Primal Fall -- I mean Winter 2013

Well, several weeks have gone by, and my weight hasn't gone down any -- I was 143.5lb October 15, and I'm 143lb today.  I've gone and come back down a few times, thanks to two additional college trips, and just came back from the last one to the Boston area on Saturday.  I really fell off the wagon on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, and I sure did pay for it on Monday!  I felt so sick I actually had to "empty" my stomach at the office, and couldn't eat for the rest of the day.  That's what popcorn and milk duds (Friday), various dairy & chocolate (Saturday), 3x ice cream bar, French onion soup, hamburger, fries & a Guinness (Sunday) will do to you.  Almost like my system was so sluggish, I just couldn't add anything else into the pipeline until things had moved further along.  Tuesday I ate very lightly:  scrambled eggs, yogurt.  I had hot water & honey and various kinds of tea on Monday & Tuesday.  Yesterday I ate more normally and had my medicinal Belgian ale, but haven't had my sausage yet for breakfast.  Today's lunch at work was our free annual turkey lunch.  I had turkey w/cranberry sauce, root vegetables and broccoli, and lots of beets.  Too much food!  I'm not used to having a big lunch anymore.

In addition to the improvements to my house I want to work on this weekend, I want to start working up to pullups again.  I'm going to start the first of the five stages -- see this video for more info (thanks to Marc for posting this!)  I think I'm going to alternate chinups and close-grip pullups (alternate days, not alternate sets), because I've been able to do close-grip pullups as well as chinups in the past (never more than 2 in a row).

My goal is to get under 140 in 3 weeks.  And coming up is Thanksgiving, and my birthday the day after.  I am not going to have my usual Carvel ice cream cake this year.  I'll have a gluten-free or primal brownie.

Dukan/Primal Fall 2013 -- Week 11

Days 71-77
Weight: 143.50lb (65.09kg, 10.25st)
Loss: 1.75lbs (0.79kg, .12
st) for the week
Total lost post-vacation: 12.25lb (5.56kg, 0.88st)

t)

Average weight this past week: 143.86lb
Average weight the week before: 145.67lb

Exercise:  We walked to the Cloisters (uphill) and back from our house.  Got off the subway early a few times, ran errands at lunch a few times.

Well, I'm only 1.5lbs higher than when I left on our college tour weekend, but getting back into the rhythm of regular life is tough.  This past weekend, I had one Costco hot dog, and had a restaurant meal on Sunday which had some french fries, which I ate, plus 1.5 glasses of red wine.  Monday I had terrible cravings, and had a Bobo's oat bar after lunch.  I love oatmeal, and I really miss it.  I ate two small apples 3-4 times last week, had my beer 2x.  I'm going to try to have less sodium this week, but once again Friday we'll be driving away for a college visit and coming back on Sunday, so I'll have to be careful not to bust my diet again.  The next trip after that will be 3 weeks later in November.

Dukan/Primal Fall 2013 -- Week 10

Days 64-70
Weight: 145.25lb (65.88kg, 10.38st)
Gain: 3.25lbs (1.48kg, 2.83st) for the week
Total lost post-vacation: 10.50lb (4.76kg, 0.75st)

12.75lb (5.78kg, 0.91st)

Average weight this past week: 145.25lb
Average weight the week before: 141.96lb

Well, I gained some weight while we were on the college trip.  The first few days I was really good, I snacked out of our cooler for lunch, but I succumbed to the good food.  I'll know in 7-10 days how much of the extra lbs stuck.

Dukan/Primal Summer/Fall 2013 -- Week 9

Days 57-63
Weight: 141.25lb (64.07kg, 10.09st)
Loss: .5lbs (0.23kg, .03st) for the week
Total lost post-vacation: 14.50lb (6.58kg, 1.04st)
Total lost since 3/2011: 16.75lb (7.60kg, 1.20s
t)

Milestones: BMI under 22.5, 2/3rds of the way to my target weight!
Average weight this past week: 142.07lb
Average weight the week before: 141.96lb

Exercise: Walked extra to work 2x, 9 flights of stairs 1x at work, ran errands at lunch 3x.  Saturday walked 20min to get to car rental location.  On Sunday walked around college town 1 & had a campus tour, then drove to college town 2 and walked around.

I am posting this while on our college tour road trip!  The trip started Sunday, so the weight above is Saturday morning's weight, as I won't have access to my scale until Friday evening.  Saturday I had a beer and two sausages w/sodium, so unfortunately, the scale was unfriendly on Sunday.  Sniff.

I was wondering why I was stalling (I should consider it "maintaining") at 142lb, but then when I looked up how many calories I'd been eating in walnuts it made sense.  Monday & Tuesday I had probably 600+ calories in walnuts (several handfuls).  No wonder!  Wednesday I only had one handful.  I also had been eating bacon for breakfast, as they haven't had my favorite pork link.  The sodium was aggravating me, so I had omelets Thursday & Friday instead.

I hope I am turning into what Mark Sisson calls a fat-burning beast!  I am still shrinking, which is the best indicator.  I've had some sort of loss every week.

Drinking too much water can mess with your diet!

I don't mean the amount of water that will literally make you sick (hypernatremia) which can be fatal.  I mean following the 8oz eight times a day rule.  I've never been much of a water drinker.  When I was a kid, I drank mostly milk.  Once I started working out 25 yrs ago, I started incorporating water into my diet.  However, it wasn't until the last 5 yrs, and especially the last 12 months, when I started drinking 100-150oz of water a day.  I was feeling bloated, and lots of blogs and websites say to drink more water, it'll flush the bloating away.  Well, that doesn't work, when the reason you are bloated is the excessive amounts of water!

My weight just wouldn't go down the first few months of this year, and the bloating was a serious problem.  I sometimes looked like I was 6 months pregnant, and my lungs and other organs were compressed, so that I felt like I was having a severe asthma attack.  The fact that my weight wasn't budging was so depressing, and with the bloating making me so uncomfortable, it was all I could do not to stuff my face, because after all, why bother trying?

Fortunately, in February I took a trip with my family to Belgium, where I wasn't able to carry ridiculous amounts of water around, and drank ale once every day.  I was shocked when I realized that my bloating vanished!  When I came back after our 6-day trip, I went right back to drinking tons of water, and the bloating returned immediately.  Hmmm.  I decided to do what worked in Belgium, so I stopped drinking lots of water and started having an ale a few times a week.  I felt so much better!  I was a little worried, so I ended up seeing a urologist on Friday, to make sure there wasn't anything wrong, and that I could continue my current regimen.  She said that most people are drinking too much, and that's why her business is booming.  Most of the time, if you drink only when you are thirsty, you are going to get enough liquids from your foods.  She told me that my body reacted the way it did because it was trying to tell me to stop drinking so much water.  Thankfully I listened.

Currently this is what I am drinking M-F:

Black tea (w/Zero sweetener): 13oz
Nettle tea (herbal): 12oz
Black tea (w/Zero sweetener): 13oz
Lemon balm tea (herbal): 12oz
One glass of water at night: 12oz

Total:  66oz (going up to 78oz when I have a 12oz diet soda or add'l water)

Black tea is somewhat dehydrating for me, and on days after having the ale, I will try to have an additional glass of water during the day to normalize things.  On some days I will also have a diet soda, but I try to mix it up by having one with aspartame, and then having one later in the week with sucralose.  In the past, I found that if I drank a lot of diet soda, I would plateau, so I don't drink one every day, and I try to drink only 12oz, not a 20oz bottle.

If you are constantly bloated, consider that the problem might actually be too much water, and cut back.  If your bloating goes away, lucky you, an easy solution!

Dukan/Primal Summer/Fall 2013 Week 8

Days 50-56
Weight: 141.75lb (64.30kg, 10.13st)
Loss: .5lbs (0.23kg, .03st) for the week
Total lost post-vacation: 14.00lb (6.35kg, 1.00st)
Total lost since 3/2011: 16.25lb (7.37kg, 1.16s
t)
Average weight this past week: 142.29lb
Average weight the week before: 143.57lb
Milestones: lost 1 stone (14lb) in 8 weeks!

Exercise: Walked extra to work 2x, ran errands at lunch 3x, campus tour on Saturday

I put down Saturday's weight, as Sunday's and Mondays were elevated due to almonds on Saturday (bloating) and sodium retention from bacon on Sunday.  I had my medicinal ale 2x this week.  I was coming back from lunch today, and I had to remind myself that I'm only 142lb now!  I'm feeling close to normal again!  Only 3.5kg, 8lb to go until my Dukan true weight (134).  I might go down to 130lb, I'm not sure, we shall see.  I'm not actually following the Dukan diet so much, as I've rarely had pure protein days, but I'm using the structure with the four stages, and will be following the Consolidation phase, where you have to continue a strict maintenance diet to let your body get used to its new lower weight.  The last time I got to goal weight, I did the usual, "I'm there, now I'm done!" which we all know doesn't work.

I did very well on our Saturday campus tour w/my elder DD.  I brought almonds with me, and a serving of yogurt in a thermos container, and drank some water.  OK, next time it'll be walnuts, but I was satisfied, and not tempted.

I will be posting about something interesting I've discovered about drinking too much water.

Dukan/Primal Summer/Fall 2013 Week 7

Days 43-49
Weight: 142.25lb (64.52kg, 10.16st)
Loss:  .75lbs (0.34kg, .05st) for the week
Total lost post-vacation: 13.50lb (6.12kg, .96st)
Total lost since 3/2011:  15.75lb (7.14kg, 1.13s
t)
Average weight this past week: 143.57lb
Average weight the week before: 143.82lb
Milestones: nothing special other than lost 13.5lb (or over 6kg) in 7 weeks

Exercise:  Walked extra to work 1x, walked up 9 flights of stairs at work 1x,

Well, my weight went up somewhat at the beginning of the week.  Monday I didn't have enough at breakfast, and had sweet potato fries as a snack after lunch, and got bloated.  Funny to feel bloated at only 144.75lb!  It was still not fun.  I also had a larger serving at dinner (a second burger patty), so some of that extra poundage is from the added weight of the food that I ate (the sweet potatoes and burger).

Tuesday the bloating was subsiding, but there was a death in the family.  I was straining not to come undone at the end of the day at work, so I had a second helping of yogurt, some walnuts, and again a second burger patty.  I successfully didn't have any alcohol or sweets, but the extra calories and weight of the food kept the scale from moving down again.  Wednesday I went back to my smaller portions.  I was uncomfortable most of the week because my system was sluggish, but that all cleared up over the weekend. I had two Belgian ales on Friday night.  I felt great after the first one, but once again, the second one was too much.  Hopefully I'll remember this from now on! I am still shrinking, that's all that really matters.

Dukan/Primal Summer/Fall 2013 Week 6

Days 36-42
Weight: 143.00lb (64.86kg, 10.21st)
Loss: 1.50lbs (0.68kg, .11st) for the week
Total lost post-vacation: 12.75lb (5.78kg, .91st)
Total lost since 3/2011: 15.00 lb (6.80kg, 1.07s
t)
Average weight this past week: 143.82lb
Average weight the week before: 145.25lb
Milestones: Under 65kg

Exercise:  I walked an extra subway stop to work 4x, had a long walk uptown, across the park and then again back across the park on Tuesday.  Long walk uphill on Sunday, w/lots of stairs!

More of the same foods this week.  One day I didn't have enough to eat, and found a Bobo's oat bar at the bottom of a drawer at work.  OK, this might be gluten free, and was dairy free.  Still shrinking and losing weight though, so it didn't interfere with my progress too badly.  My weight today was actually 143.25lb, but I had a ton of bacon yesterday, so I stuck with yesterday's number.

I've decided to not start taking a fiber supplement.  If I eat vegetables almost every day, and some fruit a few times a week, that should be enough.  Right now that's peaches 2-3x a week, prunes 2-3x a week.  Cheaper, and better for you.

I will be on a road trip at the end of Sept/beginning of Oct for 6 days.  Just in time to derail my progress!  I'm taking a cooler bag with me to put in my yogurt, so I can keep my lunches small.  Every hotel has an ice machine, and some have refrigerators, so I think that will work.  Breakfast will also be fine, I can find eggs and bacon!  I may have a dessert once or twice, but I will see how I want to do this.  I don't plan to "go on vacation", and exercise will be a problem...  maybe I'll take my kettlebell with me.  At least I can do squats, pushups, etc.  I'm also going to make sure to park the car and walk around the towns we will be visiting.  I have to load some sort of steps/walking app on my phone.

Dukan/Primal Summer/Fall 2013 Week 5

Days 29-35
Weight: 144.5lb (65.54kg, 10.32st)
Loss: 0.5lbs (0.23kg, .04st) for the week
Total lost post-vacation: 11.25lb (5.10kg, .80st)
Total lost since 3/2011: 13.50 lb (6.12kg, .96s
t)
Average weight this past week: 145.25lb
Average weight the week before:146.18lb
Milestones: BMI below 23, lost 5kg

Exercise this past week: Kettlebell swings 3x, pushups 2x, straight-arm plank 25secs 1x, some walking.

Again the scale didn't move during the week.  OK, maybe if I was walking more, it would.  Same successful grain/dairy free boring meal plan.  Once again, had peaches a few times, and prunes 1x, ale 2x.  One day I had 2 ales, that was too much.  Just one bottle is enough. Saturday I had a large ale (again more than I needed, but the bar didn't have a smaller safe alternative), and some cured meat slices, and Sunday I had 3-4 handfuls of walnuts.  I do feel smaller though, and the tape measure & clothes fit show a decrease, so we'll see if the scale moves more during the week this time.  I am going to up my walking this week.

I have also been doing ab work by doing leg lifts and just standing on one leg when I put on my makeup or wash my hands at the office.  So easy, and it's getting results!

Dukan/Primal Summer/Fall 2013 Week 4

Days 22-28
Weight: 145.00lb (65.77kg, 10.36st)
Loss: 1.5lbs (0.68kg, .11st) for the week
Total lost post-vacation: 10.75lb (4.88kg, .77st)
Total lost since 3/2011: 13.00lb (5.90kg, .93s
t)
Average weight this past week: 146.18lb
Average weight the week before:147.681lb
Milestones: Lost 10lb, below 66kg

Exercise this past week: mostly just walking.  I need to do kettlebell swings & pushups again

The whole week the scale wasn't moving down but over the weekend, I got some better news.    Still grain/dairy free (except for the 2 beers I had).  I have had fruit (peaches) a few times this week, which has fiber and helps keep me away from sweets.  I don't have a peach every day, just as a treat when I'm craving something more.  I think I had 2 this week, and some prunes yesterday.

Dukan/Primal Summer/Fall 2013 Week 3

Days 15-21
Weight: 146.5lb (66.45kg, 10.46st)
Loss: 3.25lbs (1.36kg, .21st) for the week
Total lost post-vacation: 9.25lb (4.20kg, .66st)
Total lost since 3/2011: 11.50lb (5.22kg, .82s
t)
Average weight this past week: 147.68lb
Average weight the week before:150.251lb
Milestones:  below 10.5st

Exercise this past week: kettlebell swings 3x, pushups 2x, walking

This is the lowest I've been all year!  I did get down to 146lb on Sunday morning, but since I bounced back up, I'll go with the 146.5.  After all, 9lb in three weeks is still a great number!  I am very happy with how this is going.  Decreasing my lunch portion has really been working for me.  I continued to have no grains/no dairy.  The plumbing isn't working as well as it could, I had some blueberries for lunch yesterday, hopefully that will help.  I will do the same at today's lunch, and will have a beer tonight to move things.  I think I will start taking some psyllium husk every morning or at least several times a week, I know I'm not getting enough fiber.

Post-vacation recap

I got back from my vacation on Monday, July 29th, and on Tuesday my official weigh-in was 155.75lb!  Eek. I haven't been strictly following Dukan, more like a Paleo diet, but I did decide to cut down my portions.  Weekdays, for breakfast I have scrambled eggs and a pork link or bacon.  For lunch, I have a cup of goat's milk yogurt.  That's it until dinner, when I have veggies (frequently 3 carrots) and protein.  Sometimes I have a yogurt also.  This has resulted in a 7.25lb weight loss in 2.5 weeks!  I am very happy!  I have had no wheat or dairy since I got back, only a beer once or twice a week, which believe it or not is medicinal, it seems to help with a bladder issue.  I have been doing kettlebell swings with my home-made kettlebell, anywhere from 10-20 in the morning before I leave for work.  I have been walking some, but haven't had a really long walk in over a week.  I will try to post more frequently, and keep you all up to date on how I am doing.

Dukan Diet 2013 -- Week 14-15 catchup post

I got down to 147.75.b on the day of the pool party, Saturday June 29th. I went down .25 every day in week 14, but after the pool party, I've been bouncing around in the 148-151 range.  I have been packing for my trip tomorrow, and of course I got rid of all my size 6-8 summer shorts/capris, so deciding what to take was more about what would close and how small the inevitable muffin top is.  I am hoping I might actually lose a little, because it has happened in the past.  I will just have to try to have a treat only once or twice a week instead of almost every day.  If I return and have gained less than the usual 6lb, I will be delighted!  I will also have to reapply myself in August to 3 walks a day, etc.  I am trying to let go of the stress of being disappointed at how I puffed up, and just try to enjoy myself but not too much in the food department!

Dukan Diet 2013 -- Week 14 Monday

Day 113 (12 days before vacation)
Weight: 150.00lb (68.04kg, 10.71st)

Again a little puffy, and the average is going up.  Not good.  I had sugary/sweet stuff on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday.  The numbers are not going to go down if I keep having sugary stuff!  I have no particular activities this week until Saturday's pool party.  I plan to walk a lot and have several PP/low carb days.  Today is a PV day.

Scrambled eggs
Bacon (3 slices)
Broiled pork loin (1.5 pieces)

I have only myself to blame, of course.  I started eating almonds, which is always a mistake, I can eat multiple handfuls and they add in calories and make me puffy.

Radishes
Steak w/salsa
Carrots
Goat yogurt

I'm sure I had more than that, but can't remember what now.

Well, the average went up a little, but it's still under 150.  I had to fix my doctor's scale, so I lost .5 from fixing it.  This week's numbers are a little inflated, but I'm not going to go back and adjust anything.

I guess I got an uptick from the beer, but I have high hopes for tomorrow morning...  I tried to keep the bad foods down, but did have the bbq sauce & frozfruit.  In my defense the frozfruit really helped cool me down, as it was getting sort of toasty on the walk.

Izee grapefruit soda
Shish kabob w/bbq sauce
Frozfruit (strawberry)

Goat Yogurt
Red wine (small glass)
Steak w/salsa

Exciting, the scale is still going down!  I feel incredibly energized today.  I did a few pullups & chair dips last night, and my walking today extremely fast, HIIT level.  It's only in the 55-65 range, so the heat isn't slowing me down.

Radishes
Goat yogurt
Gouden Carolus ale
Red wine (one glass)

Yay! It was a PP day, but they had BBQ ribs upstairs, so I got them with some broccoli. Still have to work on Operation Pool Party, but it's actually 16 days away, so I have a chance to drop some fat.  I will eat a light dinner to compensate.

Average weight this past week: 149.61lb
Average weight the week before:150.18lb

Exercise: walked 29 blocks to work, 9 blocks before going home

The average weight is improving, but it won't be as good next Monday.  Sniff.  I made the mistake of having the short ribs from the upstairs cafeteria.  They must add wheat to the sauce, as I felt just terrible a few hours later.  I self-medicated by eating three chocolate bars I had at the office.  Stupid, I know.

Scrambled eggs
Short ribs
Chocolate bars (3, 2 were overly sweet caramel-filled)
Goat yogurt

I forget what I had at home -- not a lot, goat yogurt and maybe some cheese

Exercise: 2 hrs walking in AMNH, walk across the park and down 10 blocks, walk around the Frick Museum for 2 hrs, then back across the park and another 24 blocks

I'm naturally happy the number is going down.  I'm spending the day walking around in museums w/my cousin, so as long as I don't eat terribly, I should have good results for tomorrow.

Well, I had a bunch of sweet stuff, but then again I was low in calories on the rest of the food and I walked a lot, so remains to be seen.  Feeling puffy before bedtime.

Radishes throughout the day
Walnuts throughout the day (1 snack baggie)

Exercise: Walked 22 blocks to work, walked 16 blocks (8RT) at lunch, walked 43 blocks after work

A PV day today.  My scale showed me a range from 149.0 to 149.5.  I decided to make myself feel better and went for the low number. OK, usually I take the high number, but not today.  Went out to dinner w/my mom, cousin and older DD.  Hmm.  Wonder what the scale will show tomorrow?

Scrambled eggs
Roasted asparagus
Radishes
Goat yogurt
Another goat yogurt
Carpaccio w/vegetables (had some sort of creamy sauce on the side)

Loss: .25lb
Total Dukan 2013: 3.25lb (1.47kg, .23st)

t)

Exercise: Walked 22 blocks to work, walked 32 blocks (16 RT) at lunch, walked 36 blocks after work

Another PP day. I'm putting down 149.75, because I was under 150, but the number probably would have been 149.9 on a digital scale, but my doctor's scale only does it in quarter-pound increments.  The fish is a good lunch for me, as I don't overeat.  I can put away several pieces of meat or pork.  I should only have fish or chicken on PP days to keep the portions down.

Scrambled eggs
Broiled salmon
Goat yogurt
Radishes
Braunschweiger (4 slices)
Goat yogurt
Manchego cheese

Average weight this past week: 150.18lb
Average weight the week before:150.96lb

Exercise: Walked 36 blocks after work

I am having a PP day.  Please, let me go down below 150 again!  My cousin told me she lost weight by cutting down on the cookies she'd been eating.  Even if I'm doing primal/dukan I have to cut down on the portions.  I think I've been overeating, so I'm going to go low for a few days, and when I have veggies, do the Dukan-friendly low-carb ones.

Scrambled eggs
Broiled salmon
Braunschweiger (4 slices)
Hamburger patty (grass-fed, large)

Exercise: walked from the East Side through Central park to the West side + 10 blocks north

I went to the movies (the new Star Trek movie -- loved it!) and had one treat.  My cousin is visiting, and looks fantastic!  She said she lost weight because of me.  Last summer I'd gotten down to my optimal weight, and she decided to do the same.  Of course, I blimped up, and just can't seem to get back down. Actually, it's good to be reminded that I believed that you didn't have to be heavier just because you were older.  I was beginning to believe the CW that older = heavier.  Plateaus can almost brainwash you!

Exercise: walked 9 extra blocks to work, ran errand at lunch,

I was a little bloated this morning.  I am going to have a beer this evening for hops reasons, and it also gets the pipes moving.  I am not going to order my Colonix fiber anymore, it has stevia which I'm suppose to be avoiding!  Is it causing bloating/fluid retention?  I'll just have to rely on real food for fiber...

Average weight the week before: 152.86lb

Exercise: walked extra to work, ran errand at lunch,

Spent the day at the office, earning OT.  I was so happy when the scale went down!  I've lost 2.25lb in one week, and my BMI is below 24!  Very nice!  I would be down to the low 140s/high 130s if I can keep that up, but I'd be satisfied with any number as long as I could fit into one size smaller.  Two sizes smaller is pushing in this short amount of time...  I'm glad I'm finally focused and able to stick with it.  It's easier and easier to just walk away from grains and other foods that aren't good for me, precisely because of the memory of how I feel after I have the offending food.

Today was a PP day, except for the radishes

Turkey sausage patty
Broiled pork roast
Goat yogurt
Radishes
Hamburger patty (2 grassfed!)
Manchego cheese

Exercise: spent 4 hrs wandering around shopping in a mall.  I could feel it by the end of the day, so I'm counting it as exercise

I was hungry on the way home from shopping, but stayed grain-free by having the ice cream.  I hope it won't affect the scale too much.  I didn't eat that much quantity-wise, and it does have protein so it may work out...

Bacon
Goat yogurt
Mint chocolate chip ice cream

Exercise: errand at lunch, 7 min exercise routine

Today was a PV day. I was going to start doing P90X routines again, but it was really muggy in my apartment, the windows were left open and it had been raining all day.  I was sweating just sitting on my bed, so I decided to do the 7 minute exercise plan they had in the NY Times magazine.  Basically it's 30 seconds of a variety of different exercises (you can chose which ones), with a 10 second rest in between.  I did mostly pushups and pullups with some squats, plank, and chair dips.  Better than doing nothing, and it's actually following the Primal Blueprint, which says too much exercise can be counterproductive.

Another PP day, except for the radishes.  They were so tempting and low cal/low carb!  I'm going to start doing some P90X routines again, it's the easiest way for me to build up muscle, which burns fat!  That will also force me to clean my room...

Today was a PP day.  I was good and didn't have a later snack. I'll have a PP day tomorrow. The puffiness is slowly going down, but I must start doing something in addition to walking!  I have been doing leg lifts & standing on one leg while doing my makeup (helps the abs too!)

Exercise: various errands both days that required long walks (20min+).

I took it easy on the food this weekend, but kept making stupid mistakes.  On Sunday I had brunch, but swapped out the parmesan hash brown patty for some salad, so that was one meal that I was able to stay away from bad stuff.

Saturday:

Goat yogurt several times
?  don't remember
remaining gluten-free pretzels -- well, now they can't tempt me
Broiled boneless pork loin w/mustard
Mushrooms (sauteed, coconut oil)
Roasted rutabaga

Sunday:

Scrambled eggs w/some salad
Goat yogurt

Manchego cheese
Broiled boneless pork loin w/mustard

Kasteel Donker ale -- this must have had wheat because I had horrible stabbing pains! I dumped the rest of the bottle

Goat yogurt -- the pains finally subsided after I had this
