Another quick update, and a mild gout attack

I need to get back to a daily posting schedule, it improves my progress.  I have two weeks to lose 3lbs for my DietBet.  I am still hovering in the 140lb area.  I guess maintaining is good, but I'm still 5+lb higher than I want to be.  I've been eating on plan, but I haven't had any protein-only days, and haven't really made a concerted effort to much.  I did get under 140 another time, on a day after I ate low-sodium and no carbonated beverages.  I should cut down on calories a few times a week, and stop eating those two yummy sausages in the morning five days a week!

I am also having an attack of gout, I believe.  I've never been diagnosed, but a few years ago I had a similar attack that affected my big toe. I used a classic home remedy, baking soda, and the problem went away for over a year.  I've recently had problems with my middle toe, which has hindered my walking long distances.  I don't know why it didn't click that it was gout again, but finally the light bulb went off.  I had 1/4tsp baking soda and water yesterday, and it did get better, but it didn't go away.  Today I had 1/4tsp right after waking up, and then another 1/4tsp two hours later.  I saw a recommendation that 1/2tsp is fine, and I think that's what worked for me in the past. And I'm happy to report that the pain is almost completely gone right now!  I hope it stays that way.  I'll have some baking soda later just to make sure this "cure" takes.

Hovering around 140

I haven't had that many below-140 days, I'm pretty much maintaining at 140-141lb.  Right now, that's understandable, as I haven't been doing as much walking.  I've had to rush home to walk the dogs, or go shopping for college stuff with my elder DD, etc. I'll make a concerted effort to push down after Labor Day, when I can back into a daily routine again.

Food-wise I haven't been doing my Dukan Diet pure protein days, but have been eating mostly Primal. I haven't had wheat in the last four weeks.  I did indulge in some gluten-free pretzels a few days ago, and that was really just empty calories.  I've also had more fruit than usual, and an alcoholic beverage 4x a week, instead of 2x.

I did successfully complete my first Diet Bet, so I should be getting my money back and then some.  Next week I have to weigh out at the exact same weight, 141.3lb, which minus the phone/camera and the clothes is 140.3lb.  These are the weight targets I have to hit for the six-month Diet Bet (minus phone & clothes)

August 29:        141.8lb (3% loss)
September 29:   137.4lb (6% loss)
October 29:       134.5lb (8% loss)
November 29:   133.0lb (9% loss)
December 29:   131.5lb (10% loss)
January 29:       131.5lb (maintain 10% loss)

So starting Labor Day, no more messing around! This also means I can't screw up during the holidays...

When my financial situation gets better, I may try out Cross Fit.  Of course, doing P90X in my room is free, so maybe I'll start with that later this year, or maybe on January 29th, my weight-out day.

Back under 140!

A quick update.  I've been back two weeks, and yesterday I was under 140 again, at 139.5lb.  I lost 5lb in the last two weeks, and I haven't been walking like crazy or starving myself.  I've had to walk the dog 3x a day since the kids are still away.  That also means that I've been moving more at home, as I have to do all the chores.  I've also been taking advantage of their absence by cleaning and organizing.  I've been wheat-free, but I did have some ice cream last week on one day.

I've already reached my DietBet goals, so as long as I don't suddenly pack on some pounds, I'll make back my two 28-day bets.  My 6-month bet doesn't pay out until the end of the bet, which will be in January.  After this, though, I can't start another bet, because I can't guarantee that I'll lose 5-6lb in 4 weeks.

My three-week vacation is over, back to basics

I did not follow any particular plan while I was away, so yes I packed on some pounds (maybe 6-7).  Of course, it's hard to tell how much of it is fat, so in a week I'll have a better idea of where I'm at.  This is my usual pattern, and I'm OK with this. I did have a few wheat-free days, some dairy-free days, and some days were both WF and DF.  I ate a lot of 100% rye bread w/butter, new potatoes and other non-primal goodies.  I also had wine and/or cider/beer almost every day.

I started two Diet Bets, and am going to start the 6-month Transformer, but I have to submit my photos for that one again.  The 6-month one will end January 28, 2015.  This will encourage me to be strict through the holidays.

Here are my weigh-in dates:

Diet Bet VI    August 19-20
Diet Bet VII   August 25-26

I have to get to 140.2lbs for both of them.  If I reach 140lbs, I'll already have surpassed my goal for the Transformer, as regular DietBets are 4% for 28 days, and the Transformer is 3% in the first 30 days.

I'm suffering from jet lag, I woke up yesterday at 2:15 a.m. (4 hrs sleep), and today I woke up at 5:15 a.m. (7 hrs sleep).

I dragged a saxophone 30 blocks this morning.  I didn't want to skip my walk.  Then it started raining as I walked home, so I hopped on the subway instead.

Of course, I'm going to go over my red line on my vacation.  I'm not sure what my red line there will be -- definitely would like to stay under 65kg (143.25lb), but under 64kg would be 141lb or less, which would be even better.  My cousin & I are buying a cheap scale to monitor ourselves.

I'm at the red line

I'm just not going to get too worked up about this.  I moved the little weight to 139.75 (I have a doctor's scale) but it was just so obviously not true, I had to accept reality.  I'm trying to stay hydrated, and walking slowly, as it's hot and humid in the city!

Back to my strict diet... My average was a little higher this week, but still under 140lb.  How did I manage to stay under 140?  No idea, but I'm glad.  I'm trying to empty the refrigerator, so I may more sodium-heavy days.  I'm also trying to re-hydrate.  I'll have a PP day tomorrow.

I'm upping the walking today and tomorrow, and trying to squeeze in some extra little exercise.  I'm also going low-sodium to see where I'm at.  I can try to empty the fridge next week and eat all those sodium-heavy sausages!

I was very excited when I weighed myself prior to dinner.  Even with clothes on, I was under 140! Well, I ended up having 2.3 hotdogs.  Now I'm over 140lb, but that's okay.  I'll be about two pounds lighter tomorrow morning.

Today was a pure protein day, and I kept it light in the evening, so hopefully I can make my DietBet goal weight.  Of course, the first weigh-in day will be on Friday, after we've had a graduation dinner for my daughter.  We're going to an Indian restaurant, and I've been checking the menu.  There are some kebabs, so I guess I'll have that -- hold the rice!  I'm sure it'll be packed with sodium.  So I'll have a strict pure protein day on Friday, and hopefully have a passing weigh-in on Saturday.

I wasn't able to get in my lunch and afternoon walks, it was crazy at the office today.

My average weight is still going down, even if it's just a little bit.  I'm now at 14 straight days under 140lb.

Baseball game

Days left: 5 & 13
Goal: DB V 138.00lb, 137.00lb by vacation (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb

Today's food:

Eggs, soft-boiled (2) w/salt
Goat yogurt
Chocolate avocado mousse
Walnuts
Minute Maid Lemonade Icie
Walnuts
Spinach w/mayo
Goat yogurt
Manchego Cheese

It felt sort of weird to have the alcohol with a sugar-less mixer yesterday.  Somehow I didn't really feel like I was drinking alcohol, maybe it was diluted enough that it didn't taste very strong.

We went to Yankee Stadium for a game against the Baltimore Orioles.  I haven't been to a Yankee game in a few years, I used to have a season ticket package, but it just became too expensive.  Anyway, climbing up and down the stairs is some exercise, so I got a bit of a workout, as we were sitting way up at the top of the stadium.  I was doing fine with the food that I brought, but then I succumbed, and had the lemonade icie.  It had 300 calories and 77g of carbs!  Ouch!  I ate some walnuts right afterwards to decrease the likelihood of a sugar crash.  At one point, I could feel the sugar rush, but I didn't have a crash, thank goodness.

I'm still undecided about my goal weight.  I'm leaving it at 134lb for now, but I'm going to go lower.  I still feel like there must be an unnecessary amount of visceral fat, as the subcutaneous fat I can pinch is not shrinking very much.

Yay!  Another new low for the last two years.  We went to a family friend's country club in Connecticut today, so I swam a few laps.  I also had to navigate my way around the unhealthy food they had on offering.  I avoided the ice cream by bringing some chocolate avocado mousse my daughter made, which has three ingredients:  avocado, chocolate and agave nectar.  It's lightly sweetened, but no dairy, no grains!  I also had the burger without the bun, with lettuce, tomato & ketchup, and ate it with a fork and knife.

I know, 10 pounds is nothing compared to some of the amounts I see people losing, but everyone has their own journey and 10 pounds means a lot to me! I've lost 6.71% of my body weight so far.  I have 5-10lbs to go.

Gwen also reminded me that I shouldn't mention that I had no grains if I've had an oat bran galette, so I've changed my daily goal to "no wheat".  My beer has barley, so really what I'm avoiding is wheat, and only eating 2 tbsp of oat bran daily and beer 2x a week, which is very little but not no grains.

I ate a lot today.  Not so much in calories, but just in volume and weight, so tomorrow's number will be a little higher, but hopefully below my red line!

Hydration and low sodium is the goal for today.

Even my average is below 140!  I have added a formula to my Excel weight spreadsheet to keep track of how many days I've been below 140 in the past 12 years, and even though I knew it wasn't that many, just to see the numbers was sobering.  Here they are:

2014:  6 (so far)
2013:  none
2012:  119 (about 4 months)
2011:  5
2009-10:  none
2008:  5
2007:  none
2006:  7
2005:  none
2004:  12
2003:  2

Only in 2012, 2011, 2004 and 2003 did I get under 139.  I'll give more statistics as I get to the next few milestones.  So what's going to be most important is maintenance.  I think I'll be more successful just because I've changed my idea of my regular every day diet should be.  I'm going to continue eating Primally, because it's working and I feel better.  In 2012, I went back to eating "regular food" and treats, and no surprise, put weight back on. Dukan works for me when I'm losing, but I can't "eat whatever I want" once I've completed all the Dukan stages.  Not that I completed all the stages in the past, but that kind of eating style is just an impossible goal for me, and I've finally accepted that.

My plumbing is back to normal, which is a relief, but because my diet was not optimal today, I don't expect to see any great changes tomorrow.  If I have a good day tomorrow, I think this won't be so bad.

Today was one day in a weekend of my 30th College Reunion.  I drove up with a friend, just for today.  Next reunion, I think I will stay overnight.  I met lots of people I hadn't seen in a long time, and a few that I recognized, but couldn't remember.  I'm sure that happens to everyone.  I avoided all the cookies and cake and other sugary and gluteny things. I got a little exercise in walking around campus, and I stuck to sugar-free mixes and beverages, except for the one glass of wine.  Fortunately the wine was terrible, so I wasn't tempted to have any more!  I stuck with real food.  The whipped cream is also a bit of an experiment, to see if I have a reaction.  I will report on any symptoms tomorrow!

Still on the plan

Several months ago, my cousin mentioned she was following a diet named after a former president of Finland, Urho Kekkonen.  The most important aspect of the diet, the "Kekkosdieetti", is that you have to weigh yourself every day, so that if there are upward trends, you can make a change quickly.  Daily exercise is also a must.  I laughed when my cousin told me about it, I said "I'm on that diet too", since I weigh myself every morning!  Here are the 5 rules:

Weigh yourself every morning and write the number down

No explanation needed here!  It helps you see if you need to change your eating habits quickly, before the damage is really bad. I think writing it somewhere also forces you to acknowledge the number.

Some people say that weighing yourself is the ONLY rule in the diet.  However, President Kekkonen had some other rules he always followed.

Eat fish and dark rye bread every day

This dark rye bread usually doesn't have wheat in it at all.  Not grain-free, but it is whole grain, not "white flour".

Drink watered-down "piimä"

Piimä is similar to kefir or buttermilk.

Exercise every day

Any reason not to exercise is just an excuse, or translated directly, he said a "fake reason".

Evening tea is a sufficient evening meal

In other words, unless there was an event, his evening meal was really just a snack, again dark rye bread (not a pastry).

So I follow the "weigh yourself and write it down" rule, and the "exercise every day" rule.  I also have a small meal, but at lunch instead.

Dance of joy!  So close to being in the 130's. I'm spacing out my breakfast & lunch.  I've been eating the omelette/scrambled eggs around 10, then the galette around 11, and then the yogurt around 12.  Today I left the galette until 11, and then I had the yogurt around 1:30. I also skipped my "dessert" yogurt serving and had broccoli instead, but I sure felt stuffed afterwards.  I have to get as close to 137lb as possible!  I know I won't get there, but it's an excellent reason to make the extra effort for the next few days.

Today's lunch walk was really a racewalk to my dentist appointment, and then the same back.

Goat yogurt
Walnuts (10)
Goat yogurt
Hamburger patty w/ketchup
Steamed broccoli

A new low since September 2012!  Twenty-one long months, 1 3/4 yrs. Of course, I can't count on that number until I've stayed at or below it for several days.  Average weight is going down again, and three out of four days I've been below 64kg.  I also missed the 50% marking milestone, I've now lost 55% of my total weight to lose.  Okay, so my total weight loss isn't that much (8.75lb), but hey, we're each entitled to celebrate our loss percentages! I have to make sure I fill up on veggies today, so I don't overdo the protein (sometimes I "forget" to eat veggies).

I tried on a bunch of pants and shorts last night.  I found several older ones that style-wise I'm getting rid of, and the jeans I just bought 10 days ago fit better now.  I've decided to return four of the six pairs of jeans I purchased.  If I shrink enough to buy the next size down, then I'll order them when I need them, but I'm not holding on to them "just in case".  My credit card bill doesn't need extra charges like that.  As for the shorts, the smallest ones I have fit two years ago when I was 5lb lighter.  Hopefully I'll fit into them just in time for my vacation.  Otherwise, I have two pairs I can wear now.

A small gluten-free treat

Days left: 4 & 19 & 27
Goal DB IV 137.00lb, DB V 138.00lb 137.00lb by vacation (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight: 141.25lb (64.07kg, 10.09st)
Gain: 0.50lb (0.23kg, .04st)
Steps: 6,483

Daily goals:

Pushups: none
Squats: none
Ab exercises: several
Walks: morning: .6mi; afternoon: 2.4mi;
Medical exercise: reps
No sweets: I had a cookie
No grains: who knows what kind of gluten-free flour was in the cookie...
No cow dairy:  there was only butter in cookie

Today's food:

Goat yogurt
Coke Zero
Diet A&W Root Beer
Mudslide gluten-free cookie
Goat yogurt
Hamburger patty w/ketchup
Spinach w/mayo

So I was a little puffy today, but not terribly so.  I did partake of the chocolatey gluten-free cookie.  It had some kind of nuts in it as well.  I also had two diet sodas.  I think sometimes having carbonated beverages means the carbonation has to work its way through my system...

Avoided stuffing my face with junk

Days left: 5 & 20 & 28

Pushups: none
Squats: none
Ab exercises: several
Walks: morning: .6mi; afternoon: 1.6mi;
Medical exercise: reps
No sweets: yes
No grains: yes
No cow dairy: yes

Today's food:

Goat yogurt
Fresca
Chicken shish-kabob (w/bbq sauce)
Goat yogurt
Walnuts
Gazpacho
Red wine (one glass)
Cloudberry liquour (1 gulp)
Steak
Leffe ale
Manchego cheese
Oat bran galette (2)
Goat yogurt

After having a glass of red wine, I just wanted so shovel anything I could find into my mouth. I had a handful of walnuts, then I had some cheese instead. Interestingly, I didn't have that "stuff your face" feeling while I was drinking the ale.  Is this telling me something?  I have always thought of beer and stout as "food" not just a beverage.

I ended up being puffy and bloated.  I think there was a lot of salt in the Gazpacho.  It was labeled Vegan when I bought it yesterday at the office, but who knows if there was wheat in it or not.  I will have to ask tommorrow.  The steak was also salty, as was the Manchego, so it's just a high-sodium day, and tomorrow the scale will go up.  Oh well, it'll all flush out hopefully by Monday, if I am careful about my choices tomorrow.

Goat yogurt (2/3 serving)
Manchego cheese
Berries (2 each raspberry, blackberry, 1 strawberry
Sparkling wine (1.25 glass)
Goat yogurt
Spinach w/mayo
Chicken tenders w/salsa (3)

This matches my lowest weight this year in January, and my lowest in 2013 (October).  Anything lower is a new low since September 2012!  Finally!  I should have been at my goal months ago, and got side-tracked.  I'm going to continue my protein & vegetable days through Tuesday.  That way I hope to clean out my plumbing and will be as low as possible for my last push to reach 137lb by Friday the 13th (which is a lucky day for me!)

A co-worker retired, and I was able to avoid all the non-primal food.  I decided to have the berry skewers, so 5 berries in total, then manchego slices and the sparkling wine. I also popped into a wine store which had a tasting, so I had some sparkling red wine (lambrusco).

Yay!  I went down again!  I was planning on having an omelette w/spinach & mushrooms this morning, but the line cook had other plans, and gave me my usual without asking me.  And someone else cleared away all the breakfast meats/sausages/bacon! Oh well, I was planning to have a low sodium day anyway.  I'm glad I brought some walnuts, because I've noticed that when I have an omelette w/veggies or just eggs, I get hungry earlier.  That's probably due to the omelette being so low-fat, so I think the nuts will help with that.

Another PV day today.  For this morning's weigh-in I was dehydrated, so I'm just hoping I'll maintain in the next few days.  Got in a walk this morning, back to my routine.  I'm trying to eat a smaller portion of steak when I have it.  I can eat a lot of steak, but that doesn't mean I should when I'm trying to lose weight!

I had a PV day yesterday, and tried to keep the sodium down, as I had had Costco mesquite wings on Sunday and was definitely retaining fluids yesterday.  I don't have any major food events coming up in the next week, so I'm going to try to take advantage and be really good.  I know I can't reach 134lb before I leave on my trip, but I'd like to be solidly in the 130's by then.  I know I CAN do it, but will I? I have 32 days.

No news means no good weightloss news...

Yes, it's true, I would have been busily posting if I had anything to boast about.  I ate too many carbs in that college town we visited, and so I plumped up a couple of pounds to 142.5-143.5lb, which is where I've been hovering this entire time.  Of course, my "high" is still lower than it was in the past.

I wasn't successful with my second DietBet, but that wasn't such a surprise.  I have two more DietBets:  one is 137lb next week (not likely!) and the other is 138lb at the end of June (doable).  So I just have to keep plugging along.  I'll start posting again daily tonight/tomorrow.

Picked up a rental car at the Westchester County Airport, then drove up to the college that my elder daughter was accepted to off the waitlist.  I felt she'd be able to overcome some negative impressions she had about the school, and I was successful!  She's not 100% sure she wants to go to this school, but she's much closer to saying yes.  I hope she does. The town is fantastic, and we had a nice walk around the campus, a much better tour than we had originally.  I managed to stay dairy/wheat free I think.  I did order another beer at dinner, but thought better of it, and only had a few sips.  Plus, it was a light-colored beer, and looked suspiciously wheaty.  So, it was not a low-calorie day!  Got home and watched "The Normal Heart".  Very powerful but depressing movie.  My two daughters watched it as well, which I think was very important (although it was rather sexually graphic!)  Thought about my dear friends Richard and Bobby who died from AIDS, 21 and 13 years ago.  Kisses to you, my boys.

Just stayed at home.  I was supposed to get together with a friend, but he didn't contact me until after 3 the same day.  I hate that!  I was eventually "told" can we meet at 7:30?  Uh, sure, but I'll have to leave by 9-9:30 because it takes an hour to get home, and I had a lot of driving to do on Sunday and wanted to be well rested.  And then after all that, never mind because he was tense, and he just wanted to relax.  Yes, thanks, and I actually had said no to another friend who invited me to go to Fleet week on Saturday.  No more same-day plans!

It was a rainy day today, so I wasn't able to walk at lunch or after work. I'm bloated thanks to the bottle of ale I had yesterday, but it has other advantages, so I just make sure I don't have it around the time of a weigh in.  Therefore, seeing this one pound gain isn't that stressful.   My average weight has been steadily declining in the last two weeks, so a little bounce up isn't affecting the big picture.

Leffe Belgian Ale
Hamburger patty w/salsa
Spinach w/mayo
Goat yogurt

And I didn't win my DietBet.  I'm sure that turkey sausage didn't help, but I'm still very happy with where my weight is right now.

Just another day

Days left: 0 & 8 & 23
Goal  DB III 140.25lb, DB IV 137.00lb (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight: 141.5lb (64.18kg, 10.11st)
Gain: .25lb (0.25kg, 0.02st)
Steps: 14,655

Daily goals:

Pushups: none
Squats: 10
Ab exercises: several
Walks: before work: 1.67mi; lunch: 2.7mi; after work: 2.34mi
Medical exercise: 3 reps
No sweets: yes
No grains: yes
No cow dairy: yes

Today's food:

Scrambled eggs
Bacon (2 slices)
Dukan oat bran galette
Goat yogurt
More goat yogurt
Turkey sausage (3 small, maybe 1/4lb?)
Goat yogurt

It doesn't look like I'm going to win my DietBet.  I can still weigh in tomorrow, but I would have to lose 1.75lb by tomorrow!  Oh well, I was pretty sure this wasn't going to work out.  Still, I've lost 7.5lb in 5 weeks, can't complain!  Bad news is I forgot the turkey sausage probably has a lot of sodium, so making the weigh-in tomorrow isn't likely either.

Fried plantains (3 slices)
Goat yogurt

Only 1.5lb left to lose by tomorrow or Wednesday morning. Another PP day today (mostly).  I was waffling between having 2 slices of bacon, and a ham omelet, but fortunately I went with the bacon.  Turns out the ham would have been several hundred calories more, and the sodium level would have been 3-4x as high.  Wow, I had no idea!  I have to make sure I have a low sodium dinner to help flush out the extra fluid I am retaining.  I may have a hamburger with salsa this evening, which would break my PP day, but it would be lower sodium.  That's better than having ketchup or bbq sauce, as the carbs are negligible.  My daughter made fried plantains, I had 3.  I calculated how many carbs I've had today, they are still under 50

For me, low and no-carbing definitely works for short-term weight loss.  It seems easier for me to stick to the low/no-carbing when it has a label such as "Dukan Diet".  Maybe because it has instructions and food lists I can follow, as opposed to figure it out yourself.  Now I'll just have to get better at maintaining.

My cousin and I have agreed to get a cheap scale to have at our country house.  Usually we both pack on pounds there, as there isn't a lot of exercise opportunities.  If it's very warm, we go swimming frequently during the day in the lake that is down the path, but if it's cold, it's only a dip in the morning and several short swims/dips while we use the sauna, usually every other day.  Now that I think about it, that short dip in chilly water helps rev up the metabolism, so I'll try to stay in the water longer each morning.  Having the scale will also give us some feedback as to how far off track we are.  It'll be easier to say no to seconds if I've seen a scary number on the scale.

Goat yogurt

Now I only have to lose 2.5lb by Tuesday or Wednesday morning.  Today is a PP day.  I also had a lot of salt today, so I have to make sure I drink plenty of water tomorrow.

Today's food:

Goat yogurt
Hamburger patty w/salt
Shish kabob w/bbq sauce
Salmon
Asparagus spears (3)
Goat yogurt
Walnuts

Ran some errands.  It was nice to see a lower number today.  I still have 3.25lb to lose.  Hmmm.  I was going to have a Dukan pure protein (PP) day, but my daughter surprised me and made me salmon w/asparagus, so I ate that.  The salmon was made with a little maple syrup, and the asparagus had butter.  It was yummy!  Hopefully I don't react too badly.  I'll have a PP day tomorrow and Monday.

Salted cashews are one of my domino foods

Days left: 5 & 13 & 28
Goal DBII 139.75lb, DBIII 140.25lb, DBIV 137.00lb (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight : 143.75lb (65.20kg, 10.27st)
Gain:  1.25lb (0.57kg, 0.09st)
Steps: 10,242

Ab exercises: yes
Walks: before work: .6mi; lunch: .9mi; after work: .5mi and .9mi
Medical exercise: 4 reps

No grains: yes
No cow dairy: yes

Today's food:

Scrambled eggs
Bacon (one strip)
Dukan oat bran galette
Goat yogurt
Goat yogurt
Gazpacho (bowl)
Steak w/salsa
Goat yogurt

Nothing eventful.  Cashews are definitely a domino food for me, I just want to eat as many as I have in front of me! I guess the salt is making me retain fluids. And the scale is going in the wrong direction.  Now I have to lose 4lb by next Tuesday-Wednesday.

Slightly richer and slightly smaller

Days left: 6 & 14 & 29
Goal DBII 139.75lb, DBIII 140.25lb, DBIV 137.00lb (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight : 142.50lb (64.64kg, 10.18st)
Loss:  0.50lb (0.23kg, 0.03st)
Steps: 10,260

Daily goals:

Pushups: none
Squats: none
Ab exercises: yes
Walks: before work: .6mi; lunch: .9mi; after work: 3.2mi
Medical exercise: 5 reps
No sweets: yes
No grains: yes
No cow dairy: yes

Today's food:

Scrambled eggs
Bacon (maybe 2 strips)
Dukan oat bran galette
Goat yogurt
Cashews (roasted & salted) 5oz
Manchego
Steak w/salsa
Goat yogurt

So I won $44.26, so I've netted $19.26!  Well, it's not much, but since this next one is going to be even harder to reach, I'm happy with anything.

I had three ales last night.  I'm not feeling too bad this morning, but I'm not going to make a habit of it.

I now weigh what I did on January 1, and the last time I weighed this was February 28.  I could have reached my goal long ago.  At least this time I decided to make a change before I reached 150lb.  I had promised myself that I would never weigh more than that again, and still exceeded that number in December 2012, so I'm glad my "red line" number is getting lower.  Last time I weighed 150lb or higher was August 2013.  Let's see if I can make 140lb my new red line later this year.

I ate way too many cashews, and the manchego cheese is salty as well.

Belgian ale (3)

I started another DietBet.  I was going to weigh in with a new number, slightly higher at 143.8 having had some water, but then the website asked if I wanted to use the same weight that was processed the day before, and I stupidly said yes.  I had wanted to use my new digital scale, but now I'm stuck using my doctor's scale again.  Why is that a problem?  The digital scale goes up and down in increments of .2lb, while the doctor's scale has increments of .25.

I weighed in at 143lb today (my goal weight), and was verified a winner, so after everyone else has weighed in, I'll see how much money I get.  The minimum is the amount of the bet (in this case $25), so at least I don't lose my money.

I love Dukan!  Yes, I was feeling a little dehydrated today, so I am drinking plenty of ice water.  I will stick with a PP (pure protein) day until dinner.

I weighed in at 143lb today (my goal weight), and was verified a winner, so after everyone else has weighed in, I'll see how much money I get.  The minimum is the amount of the bet (in this case $25), so at least I don't lose my money.

Goat yogurt
Walnuts (maybe 10-15 total throughout the day)

Yay!  Today was the first Pure Protein day of the Attack Phase of Dukan.  I also had a galette for the first time.  I loved it!  I can't believe I was missing out on that all this time.

Back to Dukan to hasten the process

Days left: 3 & 11 & 19
Goal DBI: 143lb, DBII 139.75lb, DBIII 140.25lb (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight : 145.00lb (65.77kg, 10.36st)
Loss: 0.25lb (.11kg, .02st)
Steps: 6,438

Daily goals:

Pushups: none
Ab exercises: a few
Walks: before work: .5mi; lunch: .8m; walked dog 1x
Medical exercise: 7 reps
No sweets: yes
No grains: yes
No cow dairy: yes

Today's food:

Omelet w/mushrooms & spinach
Goat yogurt
Apple
More goat yogurt

Hamburger w/ketchup
Broccoli
Goat yogurt

Another small loss.  I had three mugs of tea today.  Again I was hungry before lunch, so I'm definitely going to have bacon with my scrambled eggs next week.

I've also decided to do a short course of Dukan the next few weeks.  That's probably the only way I might be able to reach my DietBet goals of losing 2lb by Tuesday and 5.25lb in 10 days. I'll have 2-3 PP (pure protein) days the next few days as an attack phase.  I'm also going to make a galette tomorrow.  I haven't had one before, as I never used oat bran, I used another form of fiber when I did Dukan before.  I believe I have a can of oat bran in a cabinet that I can use.  Part of the reason I got tired of Dukan was I just didn't want to have no fruit or carrots for months on end.  I've been stuffing myself with carrots and have had an apple a day for months, so I think I can do without for a few weeks to get back on track.

I can see my DietBet money vanishing!

Days left: 4 & 12 & 20
Goal DBI: 143lb, DBII 139.75lb, DBIII 140.25lb (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight : 145.25lb (65.88kg, 10.38st)
Loss: 0.25lb (.11kg, .01st)
Steps: 7,672

Daily goals:

Pushups: none
Ab exercises: a few
Walks: nothing special
Medical exercise: 6 reps
No sweets: yes
No grains: yes
No cow dairy: yes

Today's food:

Omelet w/mushrooms & spinach
Goat yogurt
Apple
More goat yogurt
Carrots (4)
Hamburger w/ketchup
Spinach w/mayo
Goat yogurt

It's still inching down.  The omelet is tasty, but I'm hungry before lunch.  The fat in the links is probably keeping me satisfied longer.  I may move to bacon next week.  I have to reach 143lb by Tuesday!  It's not looking good, since it's also raining the next few days, and I won't be able to get my walks in.

Will switching to omelets for breakfast hasten my weight loss?

Days left: 5 & 13 & 21
Goal DBI: 143lb, DBII 139.75lb, DBIII 140.25lb (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight : 145.50lb (66.00kg, 10.39st)
Loss: 1.5lb (.68kg, .11st)
Steps: 10,084

Daily goals:

Pushups: none
Ab exercises: a few
Walks: before work: 1.4mi; lunch: 2.2mi
Medical exercise: 8 reps
No sweets: yes
No grains: yes
No cow dairy: yes

Today's food:

Omelet w/mushrooms sauteed in coconut oil
Goat yogurt
Apple
More goat yogurt
Carrots (4)
Belgian Ale
Salmon w/tomatoes
Goat yogurt

Okay, so the scale is moving down.  I'm going to make omelets at home -- saves money, and calories.  I ate a second serving of goat yogurt, but at 120cals, that's still 200 total calories less for the day without the pork links/patties, and a lot less sodium.  We shall see tomorrow...

Moving in the wrong direction

Days left: 6 & 14 & 22
Goal DBI: 143lb, DBII 139.75lb, DBIII 140.25lb (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight : 147.00b (66.68kg, 10.50st)
Gain: 1.25lb (.57kg, .09st)
Steps: 15,087

Daily goals:

Pushups: none
Ab exercises: a few
Walks: before work: 2.82mi; lunch: 2.3mi; after work: 1.4mi 10 flights of stairs up, then down again
Medical exercise: 8 reps
No sweets: yes
No grains: yes
No cow dairy: yes

Today's food:

Eggs w/pork patties (2)
Goat yogurt
Apple
Chipotle salad w/steak, salsa, guacamole
Goat yogurt

Argh!  Now I have to lose 4lb by next Tuesday!  Yes, it could be mostly water and intestinal matter, but it's stressing me out!  I don't like to lose money, and as for the second DietBet, I now have two weeks to lose 7.25lb.  I just have to stay focused, and hope this will all even out in the next few days, if I eat super clean.  I am also considering moving to omelets, so the salt/whatever from the pork links don't cause problems, and maybe lose a few of those extra calories.

The scale is not cooperating, no thanks to my food choices

Days left: 7 & 15 & 23
Goal DBI: 143lb, DBII 139.75lb, DBIII 140.25lb (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight : 145.75b (66.11kg, 10.41st)
Gain: .75lb (.34kg, .05st)
Steps: 11,659

Daily goals:

Pushups: none
Ab exercises: a few
Walks: after work: 2.50mi, then .8mi
Medical exercise: 8 reps
No sweets:  yes
No grains:  yes
No cow dairy: yes

Today's food:

Eggs w/pork links (2)
Goat yogurt
Apple
Goat yogurt
Carrots (4)
Costco mesquite chicken wings (6)
Goat yogurt

See?  I knew those extra carbs would show up on the scale. And after I ate the wings, I realized the salt is going to punish me on the scale tomorrow too.  So more days of crummy numbers.  I may have to start measuring myself so I can see there is improvement, if the scale is being contrary.  Right now I have to lose 2.75lb by next Tuesday!

Progress, but not for long

Days left: 8 & 16 & 24
Goal DBI: 143lb, DBII 139.75lb, DBIII 140.25lb (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight : 145.00lb (65.77kg, 10.36st)
Loss: .5lb (.23kg, .03st)
Steps: 9,774

Daily goals:

Pushups: none
Ab exercises: none
Walks: afternoon: 2.20mi
Medical exercise: 5 reps
No sweets:  no
No grains:  no
No cow dairy: not sure

Today's food:

Goat yogurt
Walnuts
Gluten-free Apple spice muffin (not huge)
Pure protein Chocolate brownie bar
Carrots (4)
Salmon w/tomatoes, onions, a little bbq sauce
Goat yogurt

Walked around the UWS.  I had a gluten-free apple spice muffin, the size of a regular (smallish) cupcake, but in hindsight, I can't remember if it had dairy, and I suspect there was something else in it that's causing my system to slow to a crawl, which means my weight is going to stagnate again!  I have to be more careful.  Fortunately I have a week before I have to have my official weigh-in for my first DietBet. The Pure bar has only 7 ingredients, but it still has a higher amount of carbs than I'm used to, so that'll be reflected on the scale too. :(

Shopping cart as exercise equipment

Days left: 9 & 17 & 25
Goal DBI: 143lb, DBII 139.75lb, DBIII 140.25lb  (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight : 145.50lb (66.00kg, 10.39st)

Loss: .5lb (.23kg, .04st)
Steps: 11,987

Daily goals:

Pushups: none
Ab exercises: none
Walks: lunchtime: 2.25mi; afternoon: 1.61mi
Medical exercise: 8 reps
No sweets: yes
No grains: yes
No cow dairy: yes

Today's food:

Bacon (4oz)
Goat yogurt
Apple
Goat yogurt
Apple
Costco mesquite chicken wings (7)
Carrots (4)
Marshmallows (2)

Belgian Ale
Walnuts
Chicken tenders w/vindaloo sauce
Artichoke hearts w/mayo

My first walk included pushing a heavy shopping cart up my hill, so I expended more energy than just the 2.25 miles.  An unintentional arm workout.  On way back from the second errand, walking up the hill for the third time today was tiring, I definitely could feel it in my legs and butt! Of course, the steps indicated are always less than I really walked, since I don't carry around my phone with me every time I go to another room.  Maybe I'll get a FitBit one day...

One of my children hid a bag of marshmallows in the kitchen, which I accidentally found.  Fortunately it was almost empty, I only had two.

I think my system is finally clearing out.  I hope that's reflected on the scale tomorrow.

I had a 90 minute lunch today, so I walked to Trader Joe's, bought 6 tubs of goat yogurt and 2lb of carrots, and carried them back to work.  I was able to leave 3 of them in the office fridge over the weekend, so I only had to carry the 3 remaining tubs and the carrots on my way home.  I was sure I'd get tired sooner, but I was able to walk 36 blocks before I decided to take the subway the rest of the way.

A lovely day, back to walking

I was having some serious stomach/intestinal pains this morning on my walk, but I just kept walking as the pain slowly moved downward.  I wonder if it's because I didn't have anything to eat after I finished my ale yesterday evening.  Anyway, the sodium in the hot dogs yesterday wasn't helping my cause on the scale today, so I have to be patient some more.

The rain stopped, it was a lovely 75 degrees.  The weather was so beautiful I bought myself a new hat!

It was raining all day, but I did manage to squeeze in some exercise by walking around each floor of my company's office.  I walked down 14 flights, then walked around each floor and climbed up to the next floor, and walked around that one.  It took me around 30 minutes.  I'm not sure that my step count is correct, it doesn't seem to record going up stairs as dependably as walking.  A co-worker had told me she has done that on rainy days, but I was always a little hesitant.  However, it wasn't like I was walk around the same floor over and over, passing the same people who start looking at me like I'm crazy!

I started a third DietBet today.  I weighed in higher than my second DietBet, so really if I can win my second one, I'll already be below my third DietBet target!   This third DietBet is hosted by Chris & Heidi Powell, from "Extreme Weight Loss", so far 2,802 players are participating in this one (my first one has 963 players, and the second one has 144).  It's rather fun to have them comment on my exercise updates!

Patience with the scale after falling off the wagon

Day 12-16 & 4-8
Goal: DBI: 143lb in 2 weeks, DBII 139.75 in 3 weeks (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight : 146.5lb (66.45kg, 10.46st)
Gain:  Went down to 144.25lb, then up to 148lb Sunday morning, now down to 146.5lb
Steps: 11,425 (F), 3,094 (S), 6,133 (S), 13,520 (M), 9,212 (T)

Well, I blew it on Saturday evening. I went to a party, and after having one Belgian Ale, and then proceeded to enjoy (stuff myself) with 1.5 soft pretzels, a red velvet mini-cupcake, 1/2 a slice of cheesecake, some flan, a small portion baked ziti, and another 2-3 bottles of Leffe.  Er...  I was up 3.75lb the next morning!  I've now lost 1.5lb in the three days since then, but I know some more will come off in the next few days.

Patience is frequently required after overindulging in carbs when you're on a low-carb diet, because all those additional carbs also bring with them extra water weight and bloating!  Because of my dairy allergy, my digestive system slows to a crawl, and it takes me about a week before I can really see what the realistic damage is.  I've also been exercising a lot more because of my DietBets than I would have before, and immediately got back to eating properly the next day.  I've had long walks (2+ miles) almost every day since then, Monday my three walks totaled over 6 miles!  I also sneaked in a bunch of squats on Saturday night and Sunday, hoping to direct some of those extra carbs into my muscles instead of my liver where they're turned into fat.

I have only two weeks to lose 3.5lb on DietBet I, which is doable, but for my second one, I now weight .75 more than when I started!  I have three weeks to lose 6.6lb, a real challenge.  I'm starting a third DietBet tomorrow.  I could have weighed in Monday or Tuesday, but I'd rather be forced to push myself by weighing in as light as possible, since it's still artifically high right now.  Luckily, they give you 2 days to weigh out of each DietBet, so you can try to make your goal weight on Day 29, if you're still short on Day 28.

DietBet I Wk 2 and DietBet II Wk 1 Thursday

Day 11 & 3
Goal: DBI: 143lb, DBII 139.75 in 4 weeks (134lb ultimate goal)
Start weight: 149lb
Weight : 145.5 (65.88g, 10.38st)
Gain:  .25lb (.23kg, .04st)
Steps: 12,502

Daily goals:

Pushups: none
Ab exercises: a few
Walks: morning 2.5mi; lunch 1.7mi; .after work 2mi
Medical exercise: 8 reps
No sweets: yes
No grains: yes
No cow dairy: yes

Today's food:

Eggs & pork link (only had one link today)
Goat yogurt
Apple
Goat yogurt
Steak w/bbq sauce
Carrots (4)
Spinach w/mayo
Goat yogurt

Well, I walked 6.2 miles today, maybe that burned off the extra chocolates & booze I had yesterday!  I also was good and had only one pork link, so I saved myself a few calories there too.  Being worried I'm going to lose my money really does make it easier to make healthy decisions.  I wouldn't have done that long walk this morning without that competitive nudge.

Today's food:

Eggs & pork patties -- they were prepared differently, so I'm not sure if they stretched the eggs w/milk, or what was in the pork patties
Goat yogurt
Apple

There was a function at the office today with their usual spectacular catering.  I had a lamb chop, some small slices of beef filet, a slice each of procciutto and beef bresaola.  Then I had about 5 chocolates, and another 5 teeny brownies that were the same size as the chocolates.  I also had 2 Hendrick's gin & tonics.  I'd never had Hendrick's, as the bottle is expensive, but I may get some, it was very good!

Because I had all that naughty food, that was dinner.  I only ate my carrots (4), and had some goat yogurt.  I also had a Leffe Belgian Ale. There's definitely not going to be a loss tomorrow!  I'm going to have an extra long walk tomorrow morning, and either eat a light breakfast, or nothing until lunch.

Losing all that extra poundage I put on this weekend, yay!  It was raining, and I had to work through lunch, so I didn't get as much walking done today.  Being a part of the DietBet challenge is helping already, I was thinking of having another serving of goat yogurt after dinner, but I decided to have some water instead...
